Today I realized something extraordinary. Everyone speaks of LDL like he was a forum god, I always wondered why. I registered mere months after his last posts on the GameSpy forums and I never had the chance to converse with him, it saddens me that I most likely wont ever get that chance. Today I read LDL’s life on Forumplanet; there were serious moments and funny moments, hilarious threads and some really good discussions. This is exactly what you would expect of a person as talked about as LDL.

Being a newb on the forums was something different for me. I came to the GameSpy forums looking for information on games, what people were playing and just for some conversation while at work. I have been here a year now, and I must say the place is definitely different that when I first arrived.

This different is not necessarily bad, as not all change is bad. Some of it is not what I would consider good though. The clan is no longer what it used to be some say. I was never here for what it used to be. I only know what it is. I am good friends or at least speak with all of the active members of the clan these days frequently or I make an effort to at least. There are a few I don’t know who are members returned and a few whom I have lost contact information of or never had to begin with. That has to change. A few days ago I thought about leaving the forums for good because there are people new people who are becoming regulars and I was having a problem with some of them. The problem with new people isn’t that they are stupid or retarded, it’s that we don’t know them and they don’t know us, the established members of the forums. That is what [GSF] has become, a clan of established members of the GameSpy forums.

You know, there is a funny thing about an internet forum; it’s only as good as its members make it. We all have Forumplanet accounts with which we post on a message board for the world to see. If we take the time to read, understand, post intelligently and with out excessive flaming, we the established members of the GameSpy Forums will take the forums from the place they are now to a place we all can enjoy once more. The people that we think are unchangeable have already started to change. I made a few intelligent posts on my way to becoming a changed former myself.

Instead of thinking that it’s just the internet and it shouldn’t hurt your feelings if you are insulted realize that there is another person at the other end of this web connection staring at that monitor and pounding away on their keyboard, and realize that the only way to bring about the changes that we all want so much is to lead by example.

Starting with ourselves lets make the GameSpy forums and our own forums a better place to be.

Ah yes. This is something I've been wanting to post about for a long time. I have the feeling some members have lost respect for one another. And I don't mean just respect towards those with higer post counts, but respect in general. In 'the Elder Days' (when I joined) there was plenty of it. Now it seems to be slacking.

So please respect each others opinions and remember that what you post isn't just fun for you but viewed by others, and may very well influence they way they see these forums. Keep it intelligent, or at least non-aggressive. I'm sure (I might be going against the obvious here) we are all responsible people.

This goes for both /gsf AND /gamespy.

And I feel that this goes especially for all [GSF] members. Altough not the official clan, we are, as Pyro said, the group of established forumites. So I feel we have an extra duty to keep these forums fun.

True. A lot of people will also be smartasses towards others maliciously, this usually means you can't expect someone to treat you nicely when the first thing most people do when introduced to another is try and find out who the bigger smartass is. You'd think that type of thing would be mostly kept towards those you already know.

I saw a lot of change over the...two years that I've been on forumplanet. Were my first forums, these forums, and I haven't found a place that made me feel quiet at home like this.

I don't know if I want t change, or should change, so far I just tried to keep it calm and happy, and never mind the goddamn roses along the way, they're just flowers, and you fertilize them with cow shit, so really, what's the big deal?

Since LDL left, a lot has changed, but one thing has always been the same. Gsf in general, we may be many, and fluent, and in constant change, but the overall insanity here stays good, in dumb and in smart times, in good times and in bad.

Truer words than yours werent spoken in a long time, so this is to you. Yes.

Now, I think another problem is that we are lazy. As I read your rant/speech, I realize that I don't really want to get to know the new members arriving. But I will try, and make the effort.

exactly. One should really browse the Old archives once in a while, it's like a spiritual journey, for some to good old times, for others to a legendary past. It's fun too!
