Alien Swarm Tactics: Squad GSF
6/6/04 9:04am
Hey there fgts, it's Sarge, your friendly leader in red armor who drinks the blood of his enemies! I'm gathering you guys around the APC before you go run off to certain teamkilling death for a reason. Ya see, I've opened up this little IAF handbook and... holy shit! What I could understand of its high level English was fuckin amazin'. It seems that a squad of you nanny suckers can actually go into a hostile situation without teamkilling and generally running around like headless hippos until you die.
*End Introduction*
Ok, here's a little list of what I thought up somewhere between the bed and the shower this morning.
1. First, we assign squad positions. This is of course a topic that will always be open for debate as team members may come and go and questions may be raised to whether or not the player is fit for it. For instance, we don't need a medic who doesn't have a sound system or good enough eyesite to be relied upon to see our screams for help.
So, here's how our roster currently stands
(post what you want and I'll fill it in)
<green>Sarge:</green>Ted
<green>Jeager:</green>Hardflip
<red>Wildcat:</red>00033
<red>Wolfe:</red>Leo Pay`niz
<purple>Faith:</purple>Slade
<purple>Bastille:</purple>Ted
<gray>Crash:</gray>Holliday
<gray>Flynn:</gray>Bond/Shang
2. Next comes formations. I've made these so that we can eliminate rambos and errant teamkilling as faghats run into someone else's line of sight.
The leader of the team (most likely Hardflip as Jeager) will type out the acronym forms of these commands.
Command: T K
The Tank is meant to cover all possible points of entry by aliens. It works best in tight areas where the threat will most likely be ahead of the squad and to the sides. It's set up with a 2X4 walking formation. Both autogunners are in front (Wildcat and Wolfe) followed by Sarge and Jeager. Then behind them is Faith and Flynn, and behind them is Crash and Bastille to take up the rear.
Diagram:
(the lines represent the line of sight. All 360 degrees should be covered.)
-----
Command: O F
The offensive formation puts the majority of the firepower at the front. It's good for rushing situations but ideal for when the majority of the threat is positioned in the front. Wildcat, Sarge, Jeager, and Wolfe take the front row. Bastille and Faith take the middle row looking outwards, and Flynn and Crash will take the rear to cover their backsides.
Diagram:
-----
Command: D F
The defensive formation runs on the idea that the enemy will be attacking with equal force from the back and side. Wildcat and Jeager take the front covering 180 degrees ahead. Bastille and Crash take the second row covering sides. Faith and Flynn take the 3rd row covering sides also. Sarge and Wolfe cover the rear.
Diagram:
-----
Command: Circle
If the squad is in an open area and must hold their position (such as awaiting a dropship), then the circle formation will be used. It MUST be tightly knit to prevent any aliens from breaching its perimeter so that all members may face outwards while firing (otherwise teamkilling will ensue). Wolfe and Flynn in the first row followed by Bastille and Sarge in the second, Jeager and Faith in the third, and Wildcat and Crash in the fourth.
-----
Command: F O
The fan out command is the last formation. F O can stand for many things, such as FUCK OH SHIT or plain old FAN OUT. This is the formation that most teams use while playing Alien Swarm. If 20 aliens appear in the circle formation's middle, the Commander better yell fan out. Also, if you want your squad to reach another position at a dead run, fanning out will also work. For the commanders out there, remember that this is an order for chaos. Be careful where you use it and when.
3. Conduct: Try to be mindful of where your teammates are at. Don't go running in front of another person to go get kills. They may shoot you.
This game is about completing objectives. Not about getting kills. The second you concentrate on getting kills, you're going to throw all of this organization to hell and get killed.
Finally, don't be foghats. <white>fgts</white>

I'm comfortable with playing both Sarge and Faith. Good idea with the formations.
Also, a
new map
has been created by a fan mapmaker.
Here is another, its not as good though.
Ok Slade is faith and some fgt took Sarge. I can be Bastille then.

Yarr, I be Jaeger. However I think team leadership should rotate between me and Doc depending on maps, or maybe we should just rotate to get used to it and see who can lead the best. I'll read through the tactics and reflect later once I have finished my meal.

IRT #5
I was earlier planning on setting up a chain of command idea but decided that would be fgtry. Instead, it would be best if the leader is whoever has the best knowledge of the map + leadership qualities. That person would maintain his position in the squad otherwise (such as Holliday being the leader while taking <white>it</white> up the rear).
Of course, we'd only need one leader per map as if the leader gets KIA he'd still be able to lead us on through dead messages.

Well if the leader dies i'm pretty sure that they can still chat to people (however nobody ever seems to listen for some reason).
Btw, this is how I think the roster should be since it's been working recently:
<green>Sarge:</green>
Ted
<green>Jeager:</green>
Hardflip
<red>Wildcat:</red>
00033
<red>Wolfe:</red>
Leo
<purple>Faith:</purple>
Slade
<purple>Bastille:</purple>
Ghosty
<gray>Crash:</gray>
Holliday
<gray>Flynn:</gray>
