How do you obtain your games? DLing or buying them?

I'd download them, then I buy them. Unless they're awful.

Only one who trades in old games for newer ones? Doesn't the game stores offer that option in other countries? Some do here in Sweden, not all though. They consider it to be too risky, disc could be damaged, serial code missing or copied etc.

There are some developers who I buy games from without question, such as Blizzard, Lionhead, Valve and Squaresoft. That's because I know without doubt that I will be getting value for my money. Other games I will buy on a whim if they're sufficiently well priced (examples: Burnout 3, Beyond Good and Evil, Morrowind).

The large majority of the remainder, I don't buy their games. But you see, I have a huge passion for trying as many games as possible, which means I often find myself not finishing or even extensively playing the majority of them. Case in point; I was as amped as anyone else about Oblivion. To date, I have played it a sum total of 2 hours.

Call it a justification of immorality, I dunno, the fact is I'm not in a financial situation where I can purchase every game I want to play. But at the same time, if I play such an "otherwise obtained" game long enough, I'm normally compelled to buy my own box of it, even if I don't intend on playing it again. Examples of this are: Half-Life 1, Deus Ex, Psychonauts. Just a way of saying "Thanks, I loved your game, here take my cash. Please make more."

I don't believe games are overpriced. I think that the amount of time and effort that goes into their creation justifies the price and more. As a student in my own digs, I just find it increasingly hard to spend money on games that I could be spending on, say, food.

They may very well spend millions in development, and that has to be earned within a few months. Hopefully even generate a few bucks surplus.

Most games are not that lucky, they generate losses only.

I usually buy them second hand or wait until the price goes down a bit.
I don't find you really get anything for trading.
I keep any game that I think is any good.
Occasionally there is a title I'll pay full price for, but it always annoys me to see the price go down "next week".

Othar.

I just play them on my better half's computer, since it kicks mine's ass to the max. I think he buys a few, but gets most of them given to him by friends when they're done with a game.

It's usually the sequals that make up for it in revenue. But even that only works for mainstream games like the Sims.

If I'm honest, most games i download. This doesn't amount to a huge number of games (indeed, i can think of only one new game which i've gotten this year, which i both bought and downloaded- that latter due to my impatience coupled with royal mail's incompetence). This would perhaps be considered hypocritical for someone who wants to go into games development, however i will not care if games i work on are pirated, provided i earn enough money to live from. The more people who enjoy my efforts the better, I'd rather know that more people have played the game than know that everyone who has paid for it. Of course, i suspect publishers would tend to disagree with me here.

If your company is both developer and publisher, you're in for a world of pain with that attitude. But if you're only developers and not publisher... well, that's another story happy

Let's do a little back of the envelope math.

Half-Life 2 retailed for $59.99 here in the US.

It sold 4 million copies.

That's a $239,960,000.00 gross.

Two hundred and forty MILLION dollars.

Does anyone honestly believe that Valve spent over 250 million dollars developing that game?

I thought not.

Of course that money is spread out between publisher and distributor and developer and a bunch of other middle-men, but still....that's a huge number.

Is it any wonder games - even afte absorbing the price of piracy - are making more money than movies?

How much does a programmer get in salary during a year approximately and how many programmers do they employ? How many other successful games have Valve released in the last ten-year period? 250 million sounds alot, but you didn't deduct any fees, salaries or debts.

I don't think it leaves all that much when all the vultures has taken their cut.
