To be honest, my quote/reply was entirely in jest. It makes perfect sense considering it's a bit out of the way of... well, anywhere else.

But to answer the question; yeah completely. South Africa's a very popular tourist destination, and except for the off chance of being, say, stabbed with an AIDS filled syringe, you're not at risk unless you're planning on coming here to sleep around. Not much in the way of political unrest and violence either.

It might sound vainly patriotic, but there really is a stark contrast between South Africa and the entire rest of the continent.

On the other hand, now is completely the wrong time of year to visit South Africa. It's cold, miserable and not tourist friendly. I'd definitely recommend it at a more appropriate time, and when you can do it justice.

Oh yeah, good point. Yeah, December would be ideal actually.

There's still the caveat that I'm not 100% sure I can host you, though. =\

Go south for the winter would be a good idea.

Not that you were planning on heading north, but I would warn you you would probably face -30C temeperatures in Ottawa winter. But you can skate on the canal!

I would offer you my floor, but for two small things:

1) As with darric, I share a house with people. Specifically, four people of the female persausion, and I've only met two of them before (I havn't moved in yet.). Although I'm sure they'd be fine with me having a friend from home (since I'd be at uni then) sleep on the floor, I'm to to sure anyone of them would buy "Yeah, I have a friend from home who happens to have an american accent. And be from america.".

2) Stated house is in Norwich, England. I shall assume that you know nothing about norwich. Norwich is not a famed tourist destination. It does not really have any great, famous landmarks at all (although does have a castle.). It does not have a rich and significant history, largely due to it's position smack in the middle of Norfolk, which is famed for having lots of turnip farmers and lots of inbreds. Norwich is addmittedly not far from the Norfolk Broads, which are pretty in parts, in the summer, and is only a relatively short train journey away from The Great British North Sea Coast, where, in december, you would be able to enjoy bitterly cold winds, probably a smattering of icy cold rain, and some fish and chips. Norwich does, however, have over 400 pubs, which, considering it's one of the smallest cities in the UK, is actually quite a lot (I'd imagine it's probably the highest concentration of pubs/people anywhere.). In short, it's quite good for getting drunk in, but not a lot else.

Needless to say, if i were you, i wouldn't bother deviating from your planned destinations for the sake of norwich, since in those places you can get drunk AND do other things.

High.

I hope Miami is still there in 2007. My "girlfriend" was going to move down to FL this year...tropical storms scared her away.

You're right though, it is a long way away.

Oooooooh. For the very first time I've noticed 2007.

Yeah, things are likely to have changed by then. I may not even be in the country at that point. I can only let you know closer to the date.

"Girlfriend" as in she wants to be my full-time regular girlfriend but she lives about an hour away, so it's just not going to happen.

I'm one of those clingy, dependent guys that needs my girlfriend to be available to me 24/7 happy

heh. ironically, not a single tropical storm has hit Florida this season.

and noone can really develop a serious commitment with an hour's distance between you two. that's just ridiculous.
