"I see no reason why a man should found a company or invest in stocks when inventing your own religion is an infinitely more profitable prospect" - L. Ron Hubbard

http://www.xenu.net/ has the skinny on Scientology. Plus it's free.

I think it's a bit ignorant to refer to dianetics as a religion. It's just a pyramid scheme that lures in dumb people with celebrity endorsements and promises of a bunch of easy answers.

LadyG: Have you read "Magician" by Raymond E. Feist? Could be the best book I've read.

No, I don't think I've had the pleasure. It's fantasy, right?

It is, yes. Please do, if you're looking for an amazing read.

I'm not amazingly well read in a lot of fantasy (pretty much only read LotR, Magician, Sword of Truth and Discworld) but reading Magician almost makes me feel like it's the only Fantasy book I ever need to read.

I started reading because of Tintin and his little dog Snowy.

That and Asterix and Obelix.

Shortly after that I read the majority of the Great Books series. And then a lot of other of what most Western intellectuals would consider great literature. And then some of what Eastern intellectuals would call great literature.

I don't care if you have to give kids comic books, if they eventually start reading good shit, it's all worth it.

why do people read its a waste of time when you could be sitting on your computer teaching your black and white 2 creature to be a blood thirsty killer

I read for information mainly. I would also rather be capable of reading anything of importance to me and figure out first hand what is being said than going by what "Someone Said" it is about.

That's a very wise thing to do. First hand knowledge beats hearsay any day.

I appreciate that, I'm just making the argument that L. Ron's Dianetics book is not particularly powerful and/or interesting. It's also overly long, the prose is pedestrian and the 'plot' (as such it is) makes no sense.

In light of recent OTs and Auditors leaving the cult to write exposes on its working and politics, their information is probably as illuminating as you will find.

It also kind of negates the 'controversy' aspect of the appeal of reading it. I mean, why read the first part of something when the full course of books will cost you about $500,000 and twenty years of your life, when you can get the gist of what's up after a few minutes of web browsing?

Of course, if you just want to read a good sci fi book there are far more interesting, readable and (even in this day and age) controversial books out there.

Can't log in for some reason.

Grant Morrison's 'Lovely Biscuits' series of short stories has certain elements that touch on sci fi. Aside from that it's a wonderfully dark cavalcade of the macabre, the grotesque and the downright bizarre.

If you're into comics Warren Ellis's Transmetropolitan could probably be called sci fi. It's about a kamikaze journalist who goes around shooting people with a gun that makes them shit themselves. Basically.

Do Androids dream of Electric Sheep is a classic. It's the book Blade Runner was based on.

Some more great Sci Fi: Snow Crash, Slaughterhouse Five, Ender's Game.

Also there's a cute Terry Pratchett book called "Only you can save mankind" that I picked up for the equivalent of $3. It's aimed at "younger readers" but it was entertaining nonetheless.
