Maybe. If I got a job a designing part of a game or working on graphics then i might possibley think about it. I have worked on a join text-based project thing with my freind that never got finished, mainly because we argues wether or not to go fiurther and include a samll picture at the top. (Good example is the hitch-hikers game on BBC). I said yes to pictures, but he wanted things plain and simple. Anyway, its still a bit to early for me to decide, got too many exams to worry about...

I would like to. However I don't think it's the best choice for me. I could learn coding quickly enough, but I have another plan that I would like to try first *TOP SECRET* that in the end may allow me to start my own game studio, along with other things.

Would I take one? Hell, it's all I care to do.

Designer or technologist, preferably. That's right, the two with a 0.0001% chance of actually getting a job at.

Game programmer isn't hard to get a job at. Being good helps tremendously, but having a good looking portfolio together helps lots and lots more, unless you're of course applying for a senior position, heh.

This isn't based on first-hand experience, though, but I've seen my boss reject guys with awesome flashy tech demo's in favor for the guys who actually managed to get a game together and present it awesomely.

Also, you don't want to stick around to where you live. There's always a huge demand for (good) game programmers anywhere. But yeah, game designer is pretty much an impossible job to apply for unless you start your own studio.. so.. Darric, when are we going to start a studio in the beautiful South Africa?

Numbers make my head hurt so that would be a "no" from me... I'm doomed to take an arts course and spend life wandering the streets, looking for pieces of sandwiches and old socks...

Artists (models, textures and animation) don't crunch numbers.
Level designers do, but only a very little bit.

Designers do need to crunch numbers, and it'd probably help if you're an accountant who went funny in the head.

Probably not.

It doesn't seem like a stable income source, and I'm sure there's too much pressure trying to crank out the code before what you're doing is obsolete.

I suppose there are some almost "fun" positions, like taking care of a game server.

If you're in for the money, you'll find that the doors to the industry have been permanently sealed off. For now, anyway.

Money and work conditions are in the rise, though.

Lately it's been somewhat of a career choice to design, however I'm still unsure as to where to start. Still need to learn the basics :S.

Leveldesign. There's no way to enter the industry as a designer. With most gamedev companies the leveldesigners are the slaves of the designers, however, there are alos a lot of companies where that isn't the case.

At Triumph', the level designers do have a lot of influence on the game's design (which is a really good thing).

So yeah, if you want to be a designer, aim for level design.

And then, focus on one engine to make levels for to show that you can create effective and beautiful levels using the tools you were given, but not at the cost of making levels for other games with different tools. If you can demonstrate that you can make interesting levels in whatever game, regardless of the engine, you're bound to be hired.
