Like everyone else on this forum I play a lot games, handheld, pc, console, and even some board games.

But something I've started to notice recently is that games are not really offering much new, and i'm starting to think that some genres have offered as much as they can, and that's why we're seeing the cross polination of genres, racing games with RPG lite features, fps games with hints of strategy etc.

But what has got me worried is that we are not going to see any new genres.

Computers have so many tricks up their sleaves currently.. but developers arn't really doing enough with them.

It's all well and good that a city can be created and cars be made to drive around it and it fits on a dvd, but is that trully enough?

Do we actually have enough control over the realities we are given to play in?

While I'd always say I'd like to see more innovation I also can't really criticise developers as I'm not exactly a font of ideas for innovation myself! Personally I'm happy as long as a game provides me with a good story or entertaining style of gameplay which draws me into the experience; whether it's a tried and true genre or a more experimental mix of genres or with some sort of fancy new gimmick.

The answer (well one answer anyway) to that question that springs to mind is Spore, when it is eventually released.

It certainly looks to be something new and with a large amount of control for the player.

Personally I'm not to enamoured with the idea of having a lot of control or freedom as it will inevitably lead to the weakening of both plot and character, which as I've often said are the things I value most in games aside from gameplay. I realise that I probably put more emphasis on this than the average gamer and that the adventure and action adventure games I favour are more of a niche market than I'd like them to be and I can accept that.

Anyway, I think I'm going off on a bit of a tangent here so back on topic methinks. I'd certainly like to see some more new ideas, even if they aren't things that I'm likely to play. However I find it a struggle to think what these things might be. I'll just wait for developers to surprise me. There are certainly a few quirky titles about here and there. For example, although it may be inspired by Pachinko, I found Peggle to be refreshingly different and utterly addictive.

I'm also looking forward to Aquaria, whose control system appears to be fairly rare (I'll stop short of using the word unique until it comes out and I get the chance to play it) for a 2D game.

they do exist but mostly in terms of graphics. Few games are trying to do innovative things but either they fail or they do great. I hope Bioshock has some innovations to show.

Why is no one talking about next gen books or movies?

In order for you to develop a good game, you need to see it for what it is. That way you can stop thinking "FPS, RTS, RPG" etc.

There still areas that we can tap into for a game. Maybe have the gamer be in the game? Have the character be skinned like them. Or have a game where the gameplay and plot is about religion/politics.

They also target games when they make them to different real life generations. Just pick up some game development course in college text book and they have a ton on that. As the silent generation, the baby boomers, and eventually the generation X dies off we will have 3 more generations under us. That would create a lot of new content.

Because books have been taken about as technologically far as is practical for them to be.

And movies don't take leaps and bounds in technology every two years.

Games are new, and exploding in technologies both graphical and interactive (AI, physics, story). They really can be seperated by generations in quick succession. It really is amazing how they are evolving so rapidly. And the term "Next Gen" doesn't work so well with movies or books, but does perfectly with games.

But you can't always tell when the next gen is. Games also evolve. From Pong to Pac Man. Then to Mario.

Gears of War and Rainbow 6:Vegas for graphics, polish, and the implementation of the cover system, along with some other odds and ends.

Oblivion comes close, but it still needed to be a little more different than Morrowind.

Dirt has the graphics but not the play.

Dead Rising had a good idea, but not graphics nor save system.

I still need to play it, but I might consider Super Paper Mario a next gen game.

I also have to add that Super Mario Galaxies looks to be a next gen platformer for sure.

When I look at some of my favorite Xbox 360 games, I think to myself that most of them could be possible on last gen (minus the graphics, of course).

Next gen to a lot of people simply means better graphics, sound, and physics. And while computer processing has gone to the point where we could do more things than possible, I don't really think it's fair to judge "next-gen" based on creativity.

Gears of war i thought was quite innovative in places. The beserker was different from anything ive ever encountered in a game and i throughly enjoyed the sequence in the coal carts.

its put a few other xbox gaves ive played to shame.

I'm actually a person who stands behind the theory that the Wii due to it's innovative look at control is the true "Next Gen" machine. In the review for "The Godfather" on Wii Gamespy claimed the game was super ugly... though I don't find myself complaining at all, it really is true that the whole experience is that much better when you actually get to slam a thug against the wall and punch him back and forth with the Wiimote and Nunchuck. Graphics just cover up the fact that gameplay is unimaginative and repetitive. Bring on the Wii library.

Though, like everyone else I was pretty smitten with Gears and Vegas... they still didn't feel like next gen, the only real innovation in the games was the cover feature, otherwise they were just cookie cutter shooters with pretty graphics. You still played them like you played every game before them.

I think more single player mode FPS games should follow CoD2. That game changed the way the player related to the NPC AI. You had to work with them, not rambo the map like CoD1 or the MoH games. And the barks were helpful, telling info about the enemy and stuff.
