Was looking online for any info about the release of the LOTR trilogy on blu-ray and found a lot of posts talking about a Hobbit movie like it was a done deal...

So I went to IMDB and found this: Which makes it look like it is moving ahead

I went to theonering.com and linked to an excerpt from an interview with Del Toro, and he seems pretty gung-ho and positive about it, although nothing is final yet.

The Hobbit without Peter Jackson? Although Guillermo Del Toro would probably be my second choice, and it does show Jackson and Fran Walsh as executive producers...hmmm....

I'd rather At The Mountains of Madness be Toro's next film.

The review of the leaked script for it on latinoreview.com was pretty encouraging too.

How dare you be online while I'm getting drunk! I'll look into that script but sure, thanks. Hey, remind me about those Mr Bungle songs during next week. See if I can't find that web page for you. The songs are from live shows by the way.

Del Toro (the obvious second choice!) has been confirmed; with Serkis and McKellan likely to reprise their roles as Gollum and Gandalf.

Yeah Del Toro is saying that he will not recast any of the principals who are willing/able to come back.

I think this will be good, I just see no way for Del Toro to escape the looming shadow of the first films. He will be under a hell of a lot of pressure I'm sure from the fan community.

Hey there - this is the producer of Video Countdown. Saw your posting, thanks for watching. Sorry about the damaged CD - frankly, some of the promotional copies come that way. You were still able to get it burned off? If you don't mind asking, what area are you from? We like to track the show as much as possible. Thanks again!

Why hello there Mr Fox

It seems you have not yet mastered the art of typing the correct forum replies in the correct boxes. I think there might be some sort of cream you can get for that.

Have a good day sir.

LOL he was replying to my post in the "What CDs have you bought lately?" thread about winning the Weird Al CD.

He emailed me the same thing the other night.

Apparently TV types do occasionally read this website lol.

Next to Jackson, Del Toro would have been my choice for directing this Hobbit films due to his similar love of physical creature effects and mastered use of film as a medium to truly tell a story. There has been a plethora of directors recently that do not seem to grasp how to create an engaging and wonderful film, deciding that because they stood there and shot the thing, that makes them a director. Del Toro, like Jackson, is a storyteller, who is able to gather skilled professionals around him and help them create the story, as it should be made. Though Hellboy 2 does have its detractors, that film stands as a modern example of how CG and physical effects can be used to create a brilliant film. You are able to believe the world that Del Toro creates, as in Pan's Labyrinth, where the real and the surreal blend together into a seamless world that could very well be our own.

Also, there is a healthy respect between both directors and the directors for the source material. They are not making a movie, they are telling a story, and their medium just happens to be a camera. Del Toro may have more of an action-oriented slant, as his movies tend to fall into a more Tony Scott than Ridley Scott style, but he understands what it will take to make the magic appear to be real.

Also considering that WETA will almost certainly (I'd say certainly but I haven't actually read it yet) be handling all the special effects chores...I think stylistically The Hobbit won't be that different from the LoTR trilogy in the end.

Indeed

Del Toro and Jackson are of such like minds on the subject in interviews and posts that it might as well have been Jackson directing it. I understand it's going to be 2 movies, something that is fine by me.

Last I saw in an interview with Del Toro was that they were still considering whether to make two movies or not. He also made it sound like it didn't mean that The Hobbit would be split into two, but that it would be The Hobbit, and then another one from the various fragments and other sundry bits that would fill in the gap between it and Fellowship.

TBH, that had me more nervous than anything else. I think splitting The Hobbit into two movies would allow for them to give it a much more thorough treatment and make sure nothing important got the short shrift.

However, I'm not very sure that making The Hobbit and then some other cobbled-together film would be a very good idea.
