Which one do you use? Is there a good reason for this?

I've always used MP3 to rip music because it seems near all music software can use it. Also I've always done it at 128kbit/s. Is that too low do you think? Do you think there a noticeable difference in sound quality between that and higher bit rates?

I went from MP3 to ATRAC3 (Sony propietary) because I had a Sony MP3 player and the files were about half the size of a same-sounding MP3 to my ears at least. That meant I could get almost twice as much music to fit on my player, which was good for all-day work listening.

When I first bought my PS3, I was excited to learn that I could plug my Sony MP3 player into the USB ports and it would automatically recognize it and let me play all my music off it.

However, my initial joy turned to annoyance when I realized that you can use your PC to stream music/video/pictures from your PC, but that since the default Windows Media Player version (and any others I've found) of the media server software don't recognize ATRAC3 files, virtually all of the music on my PC is inaccessible to my PS3.

I don't relish the idea of converting all those ATRAC3 files to MP3, but I would like to be able to stream my music off the PC in the back of my apartment through the home theater in the front.

It is the frank & cynical recognition of the inevitable limitations of people in general which makes me absolutely indifferent instead of actively hostile toward mankind.

I torrent most of my music, so it usually comes in .mp3 format (128 kbps) which sounds fine to me. In the rare occurrence that it's not in .mp3 and I can't find an .mp3 alternative (or don't care to), I use VLC media player, which plays all audio formats and all video formats (except .rm).

This works fine for me since my iPod has been broken for most of the past year, and the .mp3 player I have cost about $30 and is just a glorified jump drive with audio software and a headphone jack.

I know what I'm doing, but I have no idea what's going on.

I accidentally used .wma for a lot of my ripped CDs because I didn't realise that Windows Media Player rips in that format by default. Of course it's usually a non-issue, but my Walkman phone has trouble ordering these .wma songs in the album order.

For music that wasn't acquired from CDs I generally use .mp3
