Viruses, worms and other malware
11/13/08 5:46am
Ok, so I downloaded one of the demos for the
Strong Bad
games, and upon attempting to install it, my anti-virus program (Stopzilla) pops up and identifies not one but two viruses attached to the demo.
My knowledge of viruses is non-existent. How does a company allow something like this to attach itself to one of their programs? And just a rhetorical question, but who are the people getting their kicks creating these things? Does anyone really think it's cool?

It could just be a false positive. Did you download it from somewhere else other than the official site?
You could probably google search it and see if anyone else has picked up a virus from that demo.

I downloaded it from
here
. Yeah, I thought about the false positive thing, but Stopzilla was really insistent. It wanted to do a complete system scan and then reboot, and it labeled the virus (Zlog?) as a critical threat.

Zlob is probably it. A god awful thing to get on your computer. If you have a yellow triangle on the bottom right of your computer with an exclamation point in it, then you have the thing installed.
The fastest way I've found to get rid of it is to install Malewarebytes' Anti-Malware program and do a full scan in safe mode. You can download it here
http://www.malwarebytes.org/mbam.php
if you need it. I wouldn't bother trying to remove it with anything else because it leaves a lot of traces and is pretty good at getting itself re-installed after a short while. mbam is the best solution I've found so far.
Also look to see if you have a process running that is just one letter, Q, P...etc. That's another variety of that virus.

Thanks. I bookmarked that site for future reference. Luckily, this time it looks as if Stopzilla got rid of it. No yellow triangle, and nothing unusual in the startup list.

I forgot to mention that virus does attach itself to official sites and downloads, it can even get through using a cookie. Our local newspaper site had the virus on it for awhile, spent a lot of time cleaning it off a number of office computers. This was before McAfee had the thing in it's definitions.

My dog had worms, he just scooted around on his butt on the carpet a lot.

Serves you right for not installing antivirus software on it.
