"That long time, when I shall not exist, troubles me more than this brief life" Cicero, Ad Atticum 12.18.1.

Just came across this quote whilst doing an essay, and felt it pretty much sums up my thoughts.

So, morbid topic kids (but a morbid topic is better than no topic at all). Thoughts on death?

Bob died last month. Maynard died last fall. My cousin has lung cancer. I try not to favor death with a lot of deep reflection. It's as natural as leaves falling from a tree. We're powerless to change it, so why dwell on it?

I’m confident in an afterlife, otherwise I would not be able to function for fear of dieing, and all morality would be meaningless, it would be a pathetic and wretched existence. IMO

The fact that I’m aware of my existence now leads me to believe I have a soul and that I’m going to keep being aware of my existence even after I die.

DeadLazy Abridged quote:
"I love you you’re my best friend and I really like you, but you’re a dickless cowardly retard and I feel sorry for you because I’m better than you, you must know I’m right just admit it"

I hope there's a God and I hope there's an afterlife. I can't say I have any objective scientific reasons to "prove" these things exist, but either way, I hope they do and live my life with the assumption they do. If I die and could somehow know I hoped in a lie, I wouldn't consider it a waste. Even if I were a 100% Atheist, I'd still have the same personality. I don't like screwing people over and don't like being screwed over.

Death is interesting. If there is an afterlife, what goes on there? What consciousness do we have? Will I go there with my 20 year old mind, or my 30 year old mind, or the mind I have when I die? Or someone else's mind? Or all of our minds? What about insane people? What about mental handicapped people? Is it fair they have to live life for an eternity with a lesser ability to think? And aren't we all handicap on some level?

So there's a billion and one questions we could ask and we really don't know. I've read a lot of Near Death Experience reports and there are many common themes, but this doesn't really prove much in of itself, although it's interesting to think about.

I figure the best thing we can do is try to make the most out of life while we have it and we can worry about death when it comes. "Every man dies - Not every man really lives."

Don't believe in an afterlife, you live and then you die, and that's it.

Sometimes I think agnostics deal with death better than atheists. The finality of it all is overwhelming. I have an atheist friend, and man she just can't cope with people dying. Weeping, moaning. I called her up once last year, Hey how's it going? Turns out she was having a horrible day because it was the 5th anniversary of her father's death. Come on. The man was 88.

I think there is either one hell, or one heaven after death.

It certainly adds a lot more purpose to life. Otherwise I would be a total nihilist.

I think what happens after death is out of the realms of human thought. I can hope and believe in an afterlife, but in reality, I have no idea what will and will not be.

What will happen when I die is probably one of the scariest questions I find myself contemplating lying awake in my bed at night.

That and what's in outer-space. How far does it go? Are our minds capable of comprehending infinity?

Not only do our minds have a hard time comprehending infinity but they also have a hard time comprehending nothing at all. Think about not thinking, ever again. I believe this is why people believe in souls because they just can't imagine what it would be like to never have another single thought after death.

I tried doing that one time while laying awake in bed, it seriously freaked me out. For a little bit I thought I might go insane :/

I can't say I believe in an afterlife - I have no conviction about it. Probably most accurate to say I hope that there is one and live under the assumption that there is. At the same time, I try to cultivate within myself the understanding that its existance is irrelevant to my life and my decisions in life should be made without concern about an afterlife.
