We have all seen a movie or two right? I would also imagine that most of us have seen a few sequels in our time. While most movie sequels can be quite droll, and even quite terrible, I would like to hear about some of the better movie sequels that you have seen, and what made them so great. Hell, I would even like to hear about the horrible ones, and what they did wrong to make them so horrible.

I will reveal my best/worst movie sequels after a few other posts so that my choices aren't debated endlessly without anything new being added to the table (which tends to happen when I start topics with an example at the beginning rolling_eyes ).

I'll go for worst:

The Matrix sequels.

Anything after American Wedding.

Dumb and Dumberer.

Be Cool.

Black Sheep. (not necessarily a sequel, but a cheap attempt to pair the two actors together again)

Considering Aliens is probably my favorite movies of all time and it's a sequel, I'll go with Aliens for best sequel. I have to second JMJ's nomination of the Matrix sequels for worst. Yuck.

I liked the movie Black Sheep, although I admit it is a complete rehash of Tommy Boy.

I agree totally with Thunder's list.

I would add Evil Dead 2 to the best list but it might not really count as it is just a remake of the original. However, Armies of Darkness isn't too shabby neither.

I also liked Godfather 2 better than the first movie (both are great) but the third belongs in one of the worst movie sequels ever category.

The Devil's Rejects was a much better movie than House of a 1000 Corpses.

Thunder's post, mentioning Star Trek, got me thinking on this. Space (Canada's answer to Sci-Fi) is having a Star Trek movie marathon so I've been rewatching and it's amazing how my opinions of the Star Trek sequels have changed. I saw the original movie several times when I was younger but always found it boring as hell. Now I watch it and I realize that they got down exactly what I wanted when I watched 2001. I would rank it fairly high up on the list for Star Trek movies. However, I realize what my main issue is with a good chunk of the Star Trek movies. Most of them are written as if they're episodes of their respective series. Wrath of Khan and Undiscovered Country broke away from this, but for the most part I think you could cut a lot of the movies down and get a good TOS episode from them. However when they have another half an hour to an hour tacked on, they just feel off. Perhaps what made Wrath of Khan and Undiscovered Country so good was you had a writer and director who actively disagreed with Star Trek's vision of the future and tried to make the movies unique. This is also why I think First Contact was good. We see Picard more human than we see him in a typical TNG episode. I would say the good Star Trek movies are the ones that tried to move away from the formula of a Star Trek episode. Generations is probably the most guilty in the movie series but I think half of the movies with the original cast are guilty of this too, they were just not as obvious.

Also, I think Voyage Home is a good movie but a bad Star Trek. If it was the original cast in Star Track, the parody movie of Star Trek, I would hold it in higher esteem.

Fantastic 4....absolutely horrible looking movie when I saw the first one, I didn't bother seeing the second.

Am I the only person who prefers the original over the remake? Number 2 has too much of a Hollywood feel to it while the first feels like something unique.

Hate the matrix sequels? Pretend they are the same movie. And it makes much more sense. It really surprises me the amount of educated people who just dont see that. The 2nd movie sucked because it was the first half of the 3rd movie. Of course by itself it made no sense. And really you only have yourselves to blame. So many people spend so much time hyping things in their own minds the only result can be disappointment. I wouldnt call them the best sequels ever but I think the trilogy as a whole is a solid story.

Worst:
Spiderman 3 (Attack of the way too many villains to fit into one movie!)
Lethal Weapon 4 (Jet li lost to danny glover and mel gibson? I dont think so)
Prince Caspian (kinda technically a sequel. Wasnt a big fan of the book either. Voage of the Dawntreader FTW IMO)
Xmen 2 (Should have been part of the Wolverine Origins movie)
EDIT: LotR - 2 crappy sequels to a crappy start of a crappy movie franchise based on the crappiest fantasy books every written. But I will give y'all reading some credit - most of you probably didnt read the books just because the movies were coming out, which affords you inches more respect than the rest of the world. But how anyone can call themselves a "lover of the fantasy genre" and then turn around and call LotR "good" is a complete paradox.

Best:
Spiderman 2 - Not many agreed but I thought Doc Oc was awesome and despite some pretty hammy acting Peter and Harry was done pretty well
The Dark Knight - I dont think anyone in these forums could disagree with me here.
EDIT: American Psycho 2 starring euh whats her name Jacky from that 70s show. This movie is just awesome IMO.

No, dude, under no circumstances are the Matrix sequels "solid." I understood the plot, I was just bored to tears. The brothers managed to take all of the fun and suspense out of the world of the Matrix.

It was probably doomed from the start. Neo was immortal by the end of the first movie, so there was no danger in the sequels. I was mildly interested in the out-of-Matrix sequences, but everything looked so fake that I couldn't take it seriously.

I know Neo's resurrection was integral to the first movie, but it killed the sequels. They would have been much better if Neo had died.

The second Indiana Jones movie was pretty terrible, especially when compared to 1 and 3. The latest one was more disappointing than anything, it just lacked the spark that the originals had.

I liked the LotR series, and the LotR books. I can't see why you don't mataislik, but hey that's your opinion. Still, it clearly had something going for it to be such a monster success for all these years (not just the movies, but the books too).

Yeah, the LoTR trilogy was probably the most satisfying overall for me.

Matrix started extremely strong, and then went downhill extremely fast. I hated the third movie big-time.

Aliens started strong, delivered a strong follow-up, and then came with a mediocre third and even-more-mediocre fourth installment.

Star Wars started so-so, got totally awesome with the next one (Empire), and then delivered a good third movie, despite a few minor annoyances (or maybe harbingers of major annoyances to come). Then the new movies hit, and I actually liked Phantom Menace when Jar-Jar wasn't onscreen...but then I literally wanted to walk out of Attack of the Clones due to the ultra-mega-shitty romance scenes and dialogue between Anakin and Padme. About three stellar action scenes interspersed throughout the movie saved it though (Kenobi vs Jango, beginning of the clone war, and Yoda vs Dooku). Revenge of the Sith just kinda blew past without much emotion for me, and when it was over, I was basically just like, "Well, that's it."

To really kick it old school, Sanjuro is an excellent "sequel" to Yojimbo. Toshiro Mifune FTW in my book.
