I bought a Logitech trackman (thumb-ball) off craigslist and when I use it, I suck at it!

I've used it for two days and clicking on something small like the close and maximize window buttons is a true struggle, and highlighting blocks of text is next to impossible.

So far I can navigate better using my Wacom drawing tablet, or using a regular mouse left handed, and I feel like it would be easier to lean how to write with my feet!

If any of you use trackballs can you tell me how long it takes to get used to using one?

I used one until the dongle broke recently, it doesn't take long to get used to them. After playing some Half-Life 2 for a few weeks it became second nature.
My advice? Play some mouse intensive games with it, you'll get better at it relatively quick.

Thanks, I’ll give that a try.

I made the switch a long time ago so I don't remember, but keep at it. It's definitely worth it!

Stick with it. I use a trackball at home and a mouse at work. Both feel natural to me. The mouse works a bit better for gaming though.

For me, I found that it takes approximately longer than I'm willing to wait to get used to a trackball. I used to have a friend who swore by his (he would literally stand next to it and utter profanities), but when I tried it during Quake 2, I looked like a drunken sailor staggering down the hallways, shooting at the floor, ceiling, basically everything that wasn't a Strogg.

I gave up pretty damn quick and never tried again. I'm fine with my optical mouse, thank you very much.

It is the frank & cynical recognition of the inevitable limitations of people in general which makes me absolutely indifferent instead of actively hostile toward mankind.
