I've been a mainly PC gamer since 1998, however lately (ie. over the last year) I've grown bored with PC gaming. It's just not there for me anymore. So I was thinking of supplementing it with a console. My first thought a couple months back was getting a Wii but I've already decided against that - weak graphics, few serious titles, etc.. I don't have long periods of boredom away from home so a handheld wouldn't make much sense. That leaves the PS3 and the 360.

So I was wondering as PC gamers what you guys would do.

I voted PS3 because I have a PS3 and I want more gamespy forum's friends as PSN friends.

But shouldn't you tell us what kind of games you like first Cathedral?

I see more exclusives for PS3 that I'm interested in these days, especially when you consider that many of the 360 "exclusives" end up on the PC.

I have a 360 and despite the occasional hardware failure, I really like it. Live is fun, and there's a lot of great games for it. The PS3 sounds great too because you can use it to play blue ray disks and plug just about anything into it to use as a memory card or use a USB keyboard with it (no mouse sadly). Still, despite it's advantages it just doesn't have as many games as the 360 does and while I think Metal Gear is cool and all, it's really not enough to make me go PS3.

That being said I'd still love to have both. I was going to get both but I had a hospital bill come up and I'm uninsured an it ate up all the savings I had for it... all for a stupid bug flying into my ear :-( I knew I shoulda blasted him out with the air duster but my brother said "nooo go to the hospital!" then you know what they did? They filled my ear with anesthetic and then blasted it with air and water... $1000 for THAT. And they charged me for two doctors because they had to get a man doctor (who looked and sounded like Ron Pearlman) to get it out since the female doctor was all scared when she looked in and saw it checking her out... she dropped the scope and started screaming... yeah... for reals. Maybe I should take that part out and just leave it at "I'd still love to have both"... I'll do that later...

On the blue ray issue, Microsoft is putting out a new service where you'll be able to stream movies off the net at 1040Xw/e resolution which is actually better than many blue ray disks which go for the 720xw/e resolution. I don't know if it can compete with having a library full of disks sitting around ready to be played at all times, but it sounds spiffy.

I voted PS3, but really it's all about the games, which have most of the games you are interested in? I got a PS3 to complement my PC, I'm a PC-gamer at heart and since it seems that PC and X360 have a larger games library overlap than PC and PS3 I went for the PS3.

My interests aren't very specific. I don't care for sports titles outside of boxing, not too big on real time strategy, or any simulators outside of vehicles/aircraft. I don't have any friends in the real world who play video games so games that focus on having friends in RL aren't my cup of tea, and though I'm not hardcore, I've been gaming for over 20 years so I'm definitely a gamer.

I'm really looking for stuff that I either can't get on the PC (there are a lot of titles that I'm interested in that are PS3/Xbox360 but not PC) or just don't work as well. Action adventure style games like God of War 3 for instance I don't really see well represented in the PC market anymore. You don't see JRPGs, period. Consoles seem to be the place for racing games. I can still get my FPS fix on PC though.

That was part of what I was thinking. As far as the libraries go, the PS3 has a few current titles and some upcoming titles I'm very interested in (God of War 3, Uncharted 2, the PS3 version of FF13) but on the other side, it no longer has PS2 backwards compatibility (but does have PS1) so it's library is the PS3 library which isn't so hot. Compare this to Xbox which doesn't have as many of the really big titles I'm interested in but does have a better library overall supplemented by Xbox Live Arcade (and the Xbox Live service is better than Sony's I hear). Most of the Xbox 360's exclusives I can get on the PC if I wait 5 months or so after they come out, but not all (such as Fable 2) and waiting for hand-me-downs sucks a little, though not getting them at all like PS3 exclusives sucks even worse.

If I go with the PS3, will I be stuck with a modern Neogeo - a few really great games but a niche platform? Sony just hasn't been stepping up to the plate like Microsoft has, Sony's console is harder to develop for (and Sony is starting to play games like cutting the compatibility). But it's looking more and more like this is the PS3's year. If I go with the Xbox 360, will I be banging my head against the wall harder than a kid who got an Atari 2600 the day the NES came out?

Top that off with the hardware issues - you have RRODs on the Xbox 360, which is something I really don't want to have to deal with. No built-in blue-ray support. Where the wish rumors that circle the PS3 are for price drops, the wishes surrounding the Xbox 360 are for a new console. The PS3 seems to be the future.

So though I'm leaning towards the PS3, I have my reservations. So I was wondering what you guys thought of the problem, what your experiences where.

Hahaha. That was me (the kid who bought the Atari by accident when I wasn't sure what system I had played those cool games on were), boy was I sorry when I realized I picked the wrong system.

There are PS3 games that let you use a mouse and keyboard. Unreal Tournament is one that I know of for sure.

I'm not exactly sure what you're talking about in regards to resolutions there, blu-ray is 1080p across-the-board. Considering the best HDTVs on the market right now are 1080p, I don't see how a console could be putting out movies in a higher resolution than that unless maybe there are some crazy HDTVs out there I haven't heard about yet.

IRTT:
I own a PS3 because my girlfriend surprised me two Christmases ago and got all my family to chip in for it. I'd been half-heartedly asking for a PSP actually at the time, and she figured she'd just go one better and really surprise me. I've been extremely happy with it ever since. I don't dog on the 360, because I don't own one and haven't even played one. I do know that most of the 360's exclusives have come out on the PC eventually though, which is not the case with the PS3.

I use my PS3 to play games, but I also use it to wirelessly stream music and movies from my PC which is two floors above, and it's obviously a great blu-ray player too. I would say that the PSN online community is nowhere near as cohesive as the Xbox Live community is (from what I hear from others), but I do like the fact that it's free, and there are quite a few worthwhile game purchases that are exclusive to it (Flower, Wipeout HD, Everyday Shooter, and Monsters to name a few).

I'd also say that Sony had one of the strongest lineups of upcoming games at this year's E3, probably only second to EA. There are already a lot of strong exclusive franchises, and this year is set to add at least two or three more.

If I had unlimited funds, I'd probably get a 360 as well and just get Gears of War 1 & 2 at first, but I figure I'll just eventually pick them up at discount for the PC anyhow, so I'm not too worried.

I wasn't commenting on the televisions, just the video resolutions on the disks and I didn't say either console put out a resolution higher than was available on the video format. Just that soon you'd be able to get streaming video on the 360 at the same resolution as the best the blue ray discs... though popping a disc in seems more convenient to me.

And checking it out I see that blue ray discs are all 1080p, which is cool. Back when the HDDVD vs Blue-ray war started I had read information saying some movies were encoded at 720p. Reading over the wikki article this probably ended when movies were encoded on dual layer 50gb disks in October 2006... whoops, my bad.

Also to Cathedral Master, if yer really so unsure what system to get and if you don't want to part with your cash... there's really no rush to buy if your PC is up do date (mine isn't :-().

Go PS3. If anyone's wondering, I have a new PSN name. Thunderpats9556. I misspelled my own lousy name, and now I'm stuck with it.

Decided on a PS3.

I could get the 80GB model for $400 at Best Buy (better than Amazon since no shipping and I trust those two more than anyone else around here). MY LCD monitor is compatible, I'd just need a HDMI->DVI cable (though it would mean I'd have to physically unplug the line for the PC and vice versa whenever I wanted to switch - only using the PC for the net lately though).

Not sure what to do about audio. Most of the instructions I've found for it online have been kind of kludgey. Been using headphones on my PC for years now, and would be nice to be able to stick to headphones only but the ones I have don't have any built-in volume control, so even if I found a way to hook them up it probably wouldn't work very well.

you can run r/l RCA out with a RCA to phono adapter available from Radioshack. You'll then need a male/female phono adapter if you don't have one. Sadly I couldn't find these things at Newegg.com so total you're looking at about 12 dollars. For a headphone with built in volume control I'd go with: damn I couldn't find it after some searching. Logitech makes a headset for around 25 bucks with decent stereo sound (not surround sorry) that has the speakers floating above your ears and large plush rings that fit the area around your ears. I don't think it's a problem for you, but for me my ears always feel lousy after wearing any kind of headphones for more than an hour or so... I skipped these ones at the store and went with the regular ear cup style and I've regretted it. They have a little volume control disk midway through the wire too. Saw them at BestBuy a while ago, should go investigate.

Keep in mind that you can tell your PS3 to output sound via the red white and yellow AV cables that come with your system, or you can tell it to output sound via some other kinds of cables. You can get an old clunky amplifier and then run the sound through the red and white AV cables into the amplifier and then plug your headphones into the amplifier, viola.

Well Vulture that's pretty much what I'm saying except I'm skipping the amplifier for a direct connection since many speakers for 50 bucks or less don't include a phono jack. Though if you find one, mad props.
