Oh okay I see that now. Yeah your option is probably cheaper.

I do see the audio issue being kind of a problem.

Go PS3. If anyone's wondering, I have a new PSN name. Thunderpats9556. I misspelled my own lousy name, and now I'm stuck with it.

ahhh shit, that's pretty funny.

I would go with the ps3. I love my 360 but if you are a PC gamer you will end up with the widest selection of games by owning a ps3 and a PC. No Dead Rising or Fable 2(yet) but Dead Rising 2 will be on PC and the ps3.

Plus, unless you already own a stand alone blue-ray player you get blue-ray; a nice bonus.

you can run r/l RCA out with a RCA to phono adapter available from Radioshack. You'll then need a male/female phono adapter if you don't have one. Sadly I couldn't find these things at Newegg.com so total you're looking at about 12 dollars. For a headphone with built in volume control I'd go with:

If all else fails, I can get a inline volume control I suppose which, though being kind of crappy, will be functional. So at least I'll be able to hear the thing.

If I want to do voice chat, would it work if I got a headset with two outputs, one for the headphones (which I guess I could plug into the RCA output from AV Multi) and one for the mic (which you have to plug into a RCA->USB adapter and then plug into one of the USB ports), since apparently you can't channel all sound to a headset on a PS3 (wonder what dumbass decided that was smart)? Any idea if that will work? This guy:

Did something similar only he plugged the headphones into a headset connection on his TV.

What about something like this:

Logitech USB headset with mic on Newegg.

I'm not 100% sure you can just plug a USB headset into one of the front USB ports on a PS3 and have it work...but it probably would.

Most commercial USB headsets should be compatible with the PS3.

The issue is I don't want to use speakers at all - I want to have all the sound go into a headset but from what I've read, with a regular USB headset you can't get the PS3 to send all sound to it. Even if you tell it to send it to the USB headset, from the link I posted from Feb. the most it will send is voice communication.

So just picking up a USB headset and plugging it in is apparently not enough.

From what I'm seeing, it's just a simple change in the accessory settings. I'll take a look in a minute or so and make sure this guy's correct about the menu options at least, but here's the link:

How to make a USB headset put out all PS3 sound, not just vchat.

Yeah I thought mine's was the only one. It actually used to be compatible up until a few months ago. I don't know if it was a gamespy change or a ps3 update patch but one or the other killed the compatibility of the PS3 browser with this forum. The browser does work with a lot of other stuff though, including youtube, other forums, ect.

Again, with the audio, if all else fails consider buying an old amplifier w/no speakers at like a garage sale or pawnshop. You don't need speakers for the amp to work. You just need an amp with a headset input and a/v inputs which most if not all amps should have.

Well Vulture that's pretty much what I'm saying except I'm skipping the amplifier for a direct connection since many speakers for 50 bucks or less don't include a phono jack. Though if you find one, mad props.

On second thought Akimbo-- the speakers don't have phono jacks, but the amp should, shouldn't it? And he doesn't need speakers anyway if all he needs is the amp to run the sound through to his headset.

I have verified for myself that you cannot currently output general sound through a usb headset. Though you can change the audio settings under accessories to output sound, this will only be voice chat. To output general sound, you have only three options - the hdmi out, the av out, and the optical out.

Going with an old set of speakers that I have and the USB headset, can switch the speakers out to a set of headphones at night - won't be talking then anyway. Hopefully Sony will get around to supporting usb general sound at some point in the future.

although I have both systems, so far I catch myself playing with xbox360 more due to variety of titles. PS3 still lucking games, titles that where standard in PS2(and also made PS2 famous) and now xbox360 have acquired them.
