Hiho,

My name is John Cassidy and since approx 2 years now out of interest I have been doing research on Social Media and narrowed down to Online Communities.

Are you addicted to social networks as well? It is my second addiction next to World of Warcraft.
At the moment I can benefit from this by writing my master thesis on the topic. For this reason I have just created an online survey on the "Attractiveness of online communities - a user’s perspective"
http://ww3.unipark.de/uc/online-communities

If you are interested in the topic please fill out the survey takes about 10 minutes and your time investment is appreciated.
However, I will post the findings on my blog: http://socialmediaaddiction.wordpress.com/ so you can check the results or join the broader discussion on the topic there as well.

Thanks for your interest,
John

Here's a fun article ... it's statement:
MMORPG Gamers and Social Media Junkies are quite similar

content of the article is to compare the goals from members of both fields

http://mashable.com/2008/09/05/gamer...l-media-users/

I am biased on this one as I believe I am a bit of both
What are your thoughts on this?

Hello again,

I just stumbled over this pic ^.- http://imgs.xkcd.com/comics/online_communities.png

Somewhat in the style of a treasure map, this ‘Map of Online Communities’ shows MySpace, Wikipedia, SecondLife and other online communities.

The geography is not as random - each community’s geographic area represents its estimated size, and the ‘compass-shaped island’ gives clues as to what each quarter signifies:

North are more ‘practical’ communities,
South is for the ‘intellectuals’.
West lie the communities with a ‘real life’ connection,
East those with a focus on the web itself.

Have fun,
John

Thanks to google finally realising that short links are more practical they came up with something completely new - smart links, basically translating the URL into English.

I hope this feature will spread the Internet soon. I guess everyone could benefit a lot from them.

I would like to give you a first tease of the results of the survey … however I do not want to post too much yet as it could influence the way people will decide when filling it out.

Click here http://ww3.unipark.de/uc/online-communities to take the survey

or here http://bit.ly/hkqAv to get an idea of the results in post or word format.

Greetings,

John

Dear fellow online community enthusiasts,

First of all, thank you all for your participation in this project so far! I am hoping to convince you to add feedback on the survey in this forum or take part in it if you haven’t yet.
As promised I have combined all the results of the online survey “Attractiveness of online communities - a user’s perspective” into a word file making it easier for you to filter through the data. The file can be opened in a new window without saving it, so you don't have to take any risks downloading a file from the Internet. Please download the file from my social network http://socialmediaaddiction.ning.com/forum/topics/online-communities-results
I hope you appreciate this effort and recommend the survey to your friends, as I do rely on word-of-mouth advertising.

The link to take the survey is http://ww3.unipark.de/uc/online-communities

For feedback and suggestions for improvement on the survey please contact me at ...

... or leave a comment here

Many thanks,
John

I found this interesting to a certain extent:

You might be a social media addict if…

1. Your sink is spilling over with dishes, you haven’t bathed in “a while” and your cat is probably dead

2. You find more solace in your virtual communities than at the dinner table, scarfing down turkey with the family

3. You twittered your pregnancy and engagement (and divorce) long before your friends and family found out

4. You’ve gotten so comfortable with IM that the thought of actual human contact totally freaks you out

5. You find Second Life to be a much greater alternative to real life

6. You missed the whole “fire thing” in California, but you were all over your friends’ status changes

7. You no longer take pictures for memories sake; they’re all for your social networking profiles

8. You poke some people and super poke the ones you really like… if you know what I mean

9. “Digg me,” “Facebook me,” and “MySpace me” have replaced “goodbye,” “see you later,” and “call me” - and it doesn’t even faze you

10. Your hear a hysterical joke, and your first response is “LOL”

Also to my utter amazement facebook just set up a social media addict support group.

im running out of excuses to defend the human race, all we really are is an infectious virus.

Nope, I'm not. This is the only online community I visit and I am glad it's here. None of my real life friends game and I hate every other gaming board I have visited. Were it not for this place I would not get to talk about games, or with other games, ever.

I never have had, or even looked at, facebook or myspace and while I play WoW the community is the thing that annoys me the most. When I stop playing, sometimes for a year at a time, it's usually the community that is the last straw.
