No, not that box, ya perv! Go elsewhere for your pr0n fix. I'm talking about your boxen! I figure some of us out there have got to be case modders, so let's see that neato window you put in your case with the neon light glowing out of it...

I'm currently in the planning stages of modding out my case. I've seen all kinds of cases with the usual window / blowhole / car paint (and wax it 'til it shines) treatment, so I'm thinking of taking mine in a different direction. Granted, the window is a given, but I'm planning on using a craft paint I found that gives whatever you're spraying a granite-like texture. on the main case.

Anybody else planning a new rig or have one they've tricked out?

Good luck... the best you'll probably be able to do is a coat of paint and some detailling for the exterior. A good skinned Windows setup doesn't hurt in that case, either...

I realized that... I guess should have stuck a smiley in there or something...

Of course you could always try to hook a 120mm fan to the underside of yer laptop to try and cool it down a bit... With that amount of force, you might even be able to get it to hover...

I just mess around with my fans, since while modding is fun, I don't have the time to make something sexy.

Duel 80mm intakes on the front
Single 120mm outake on the back
60mm aimed directly at my ram
another 60mm aimed directly at the videocard
Blowhole on top.

Right now I'm working on creating a little vent system so air from outside directly blows onto my case, so I'm actually sucking in cold air.

*shrug*

Its only costed me $100 so far, and I've upgraded a 9500 to a 9700 and a 2.4 to a 3.2.

I'm happy.

I'm with you on the lack of time thing. But since I'm losing my job to corporate asshattery at the end of the year, I figure I'll have plenty of time to knock the mods out then.

What I've got:
A generic mid-tower case that has been kicking around with me for the last three years or so. I had originally purchased it for plans to build a new box, but that fell through due to lack of funds at the time (I was working a crappy factory job). It's got four 5 1/4 bays that use drive rails, three 3 1/2 bays (two external, one internal) It's not much, but it's decent-sized. It came with an 80mm fan installed in the front and has mounting points for two more 60mm fans in back.

What I've done so far:
I purchased a new switched 400 watt PSU for the box. It originally came with a switched 220 watt unit. I'll probably hack the old unit apart and turn it into a testing unit so I can check any new electric components before actually installing them.

What I'm planning:
Fans: Obviously, the two mounts in the back are going to get fans of their own. I'm not sure if I'll set them to blow in or out yet. I'll probably cut out the grilles that are stamped into the case and add my own. I'm going to put an 80mm blowhole in the top to vent air out. I might put a fan in the side to blow air on the vidcard, but I'm not sure - it depends on how I put the window in.

Other Cooling Mods: I've seen two duct-type things on the market and I'm wondering if they actually work.
One is a two-piece job: a duct that connects your heatsink on your CPU to a vent space or fan on the back of the case and an elbow-like chimney that gets hooked on the back of your PSU. The duct pulls in cool air from outside directly onto your CPU, the chimney redirects the hot air venting out the PSU up and away from the duct.
The other is just a fan riser for the CPU. It takes the fan off the top of the heatsink, raises it up about an inch and then angles it off to the side. The idea being that this eliminates the dead zone under the center of the fan and reduces noise due to air turbulence.
I'm thinking about going with the latter, just because it is cheaper.

Window: The side panel on the case has a weird hourglass shape and a dent for a handle (to slide the panel off) stamped into the metal. It's going to throw off the positioning of the window a bit. I'm not going to try anything too fancy here - just a plain 8.5 x 11 window for now.

Paint: The case is the usual putty/beige color right now. I'm going to paint the interior and the bezels black. I'll probably go with a matte finish - it'll compliment the black drives and the other half of the paint job better. The actual panels are going to get repainted in a matte black and then coated with a faux granite finish paint I found in the paint department of the local Wal-Mart. I've used this stuff on other craft projects before and it works like a dream.

I figure I'll tidy up the cabling with round cables and loom sleeves later on. Right now, I just want to get this sucker built!

I took a photo of that box, because it's mine. For all I know, you could just be pretending to be all cool and leet with such a box to call your own, when in fact you just got it from a Google Image Search.

I'll see you do any better without any camera, without anywhere to host the nonexistant picture of the box taken with my nonexistant camera, and without a box in to take a nonexistant picture of.

Can't wait until I get that dual-tower Sharp x68000 machine. It's even got a separate tower for the RGB tuner (no idea what that does, but it looks sweet).
