It drains next to no system resources whatsoever.

Well, since the resource collectors take basically any material and breaks it down to it's compound molecules for transport and use, a desert's as good as an asteroid. I really like the picture for the scale. It's one of the only images I've found that gives you a sense of how large the ships in the game are from the perspective of a human. (protip: they're fucking huge).

Well, no. It's got gravity and atmosphere in the way, and besides, resource collectors only extract the minerals from the asteroid if memory serves. Deserts are basically just silicon-oxygen compounds in giant piles (literally).
Awesome picture, though.

Asteroids are an excellent source of raw materials, because that's basically all they are, but it's not the onlt thing the resource collectors can mine, at least int he game's lore. They're pretty much the all purpose utility vehicle for the Hiigarans, so you find them performing services in planetary systems, salvage, construction, and pretty much everything else.
Of course, for the purposes of gameplay, they're miners, repairers and salvagers.

Yep. Don't ever believe that they're a just as good alternative, however, because that I'd say is very untrue.

It depends on the composition of the desert. Of course, given the capability of the resource collectors to mine asteroids with ease, planetary mining probably is a less than ideal solution.
On a slightly related note: I was
sort of
bored
. I dubbed them the Hiigaran Regulars. I think I need to work on the blue a little though, it's not quite right.

Not bad. I do, however, feel that it may look more appropriate on the upcoming imperial guard, given that they're all regular humies.
And as far as skins go - am I the only one who uses the remaining two unused space marine shoulder symbols/banners to make a Salamanders and Black Templar skin?
