David and Leigh Eddings, my favorite fantasy authoring team possibly of all time have released a new book, and more importantly, the beginning of a new series called The Dreamers. I have just begun reading it, but so far it seems promising. The trademark humor, and Gods and Prophecy is well intact. Seems quite original though, not nearly as derivitive of his earlier works the way The Elenium and The Tamuli.

I'll let you know how it turns out

Please do. I've been a little interested in checking them out, and should it be good, this would be a good entry point.

Actually, reading The Belgariad, The Mallorean, and related works would be a better entry point. It's their earlier and best work, in my opinion.

I have loved Eddings' work since childhood, but every one of his series is followed by a sequal series that is very incredibly similar to the first series plot line wise.

This is most blatant in the Belgarion and the Mallorean, and is even pointed to by Eddings in the book as all being a repetition of itself.

Still, very good books. Not as good, imo, as Robert Jordan, but quite the excellent fantasy read nonetheless.

In fact, it was Eddings and Lloyd Alexander that really got me into fantasy fiction, a love I hold dear to this day, some thirteen eyars after I frst discovered these novels.

Read it about a month or two ago.

Quite good, but they still (IMHO) haven't come close to their first books.

This one reads a bit like the Redemption of Althalus. A bit lighter than the BelGariad, Malloreon, Elenium and Tamuli, but a good read netherless.

Have you read Regina's Song? Not really fantasy, but still incredibly well written. I agree that none of their books have matched up to The Belgariad and The Mallorean, but they're still top notch fantasy.

You made me go and look it up.

Now I will see if I can buy it, as it looks pretty interesting.

Yeah, it's very good. It really amounts to a character study exploring the nature of identical twins.

Funnily enough, I have both the Elenium and the Tamuli trilogies sitting on my bookshelf unread. I just haven't had time to read them as I usually have 2-4 books going at once. I also gave up on fantasy novels for a while. Meh. However, I am reading The Eye of the World right now, and it's blowing me away. I digress...
.
Which one (Tamuli, Elenium) should I read first? Does it matter? I probably sound like a moron asking this, but keep in mind that I basically got the six books as a gift and put them on my bookshelf. My knowledge of Eddings and his works is pretty minimal.

Dammit, I'm out of touch... I didn't even realize they had a new book out. I assume it's still in hardback, and not paperback? Not that it makes much difference, I guess... paperback prices have been edging up so much lately...

Must... own... book...

It's been a while, but as I recall, the Elenium is the first half of the story, and the Tamuli is the second half. Read the Elenium first.

I am a bit more than half way through now, and really enjoying myself. It is indeed still in hard cover, but as hardcovers go it's a pretty comfortable read, and the price wasn't anything above what you'd normally expect to pay.

Also, you are correct. The Elenium is to be reade first, but The Tamuli is the better of the two series'.

I had it in my grubby little hands and put it back in favor of Dan Simmons latest. Might have to pick it up anyway considering that even though the newer works aren't as good as the older they're still a lot better than most of the swill out there. Thanks for reminding me about it.

Finished reading it a couple days ago and loved it. Is it as good as the Garion books? Not really, but it's at least equal to Redemption of Althalus, which I liked alot.

I went to pick it up. I had it in my hot little hands. Then I saw the Dan Simmons book. So then I had both in my hands. Then I found a book on the history of the Gnostics, a book on bonsai, and a discounted copy of the Silmarillion.

I wound up with those instead. I think I tried to justify it with the thought that by the time I finished the three of those, the others would be in paperback.

Fat chance, but hey... a kid can dream.

Damn my limited fundage and even more limited time.
