I wasn’t exactly sure where to put this topic. Lately things have spun out of control in what was once called [GSF] or the gamespy forums community or whatever. I decided to put it here, in the pub, because what I am proposing is more like an agreement between friends. Something would be made over a table at the local pub rather than some “business” arrangement or anything. In short I don’t care who you are, [GSF], [BTFzor], homosexual or other. All I know is regardless of whatever name we smack on it the community endures. And this is a community that I have grown to love. So naturally I want to give back to this community, and now I have found the perfect way.

Without further buttering I am here to announce our very own Dedicated Gaming Server. I am not talking about a CS:S server running off some old shell I resurrected on a civilian connection. No this is the real deal. Dual Xeon 2.4Ghz 533 FSB, 2048MB CL2.5 Crucial PC2100 DDR SDRAM, 36.7GB Fujitsu 15000RPM U320 HD, SuperMicro 6013P-8B are the specs for those interested. All of this running off a T1 connection. Location is NYC since it provides near perfect pings to all of the US and is the closest to the UK.

At the moment it is running a CS:S server and the IP is <strike>69.90.33.176:27015</strike> however the IP is subject to change before things are finalized. I had it up this afternoon on a trial run to make sure that the majority of our community can use and enjoy it to the fullest (read: low pings)

So far all that have tried have been quite satisfied with the performance. The only people who frequently play CS:S with us that have yet to try are TedKennedy, [P]aradox, Ocelot and ShangTang (to the best of my knowledge at least). Everyone US based was getting great pings in the middle double digits. Hardflip, Tweak and Freestyle (our European brethren) were doing swell as well hanging around the low 100s. Overall the server itself seems solid. All that is left is questions I am sure. So here is an FAQ of the server. Please ask any other questions you guys have in this thread.

The Unnamed (atm) GSF/BTF/Holliday Server FAQ

1. What is the IP address of the server?
At the moment it is 69.90.33.176:27015 but it is likely to change.

2. I hate Counter-Strike: Source, why the hell should I care about this?
Because this is a multi-game server. It can run any of a list of 30 or so games including UT2004, Enemy Territory, HL and mods, HL2:DM and mods, BF1942 and many more. I also have FTP access to the server so any custom maps or scripts and mods can be installed.

3. Who the hell is paying for all this?
At the moment I am. I took the brunt of the first month’s payment on the server. I guess this has a bit of a story behind it so here goes: When the whole “clan by-laws” thing started I was very much in favor of it for what I believed a stronger-knit clan could provide, shared payment of a multi-game server. However nothing really panned out how I thought it would, we lost some members of GSF who I consider very good friends of mine. It looked to be that my idea of a server for us to game on wouldn’t happen, clan laws or not. So I said Fuck It. We do not need rules and regulations and setting up and long term plans. I figured I have enough financial backbone to start out the server and see how things go.

4. Ok you said “at the moment” is this where you ask us for money?
Sort of. The server is set to bill my PayPal account. I have reserved this PayPal account for the server fees only so I will no longer do personal transactions with it. If my PayPal account runs out of funds, the server shuts down. I do not expect anything of any of you however if this all sounds pretty fucking awesome to you and you can spare to sling a few dollars to the server that is awesome. I am not going to require monthly fees or expect a long term cash commitment of any of you. I am going to be honest and say that I could definitely use help to keep it running. Everything in that account will go towards the server, I will not section it up over months or anything like that. I think that is the best way to handle things.

5. I am not trusting my money with that long-haired (sexy) freak! (aka why you?)
Why me? Why trust me? Well I think of quite a few of you as friends on the same level of anyone else I know and I assume you think of me in the same way. Hell I actually see some of you guys more than my local friends. I have also been a trust-worthy financial holder in the past (remember the /gamespy Christmas songs competition?) Also if required I will show the exact paypal histories of all transactions and what not so you’ll see your money is not going to fuel my farm porn addiction.

6. Ok I am super fucking awesome and I gave you money. Sex pls?
Hell yes! If you donated money that means you share my desire for this to work and that makes you beyond a badass in my book. Not only do you get my love and adoration but I can do one better than that. Everyone who donates to the server will receive Recon access to the server (For those not in the know Recon access to a server is like being a moderator of the server, rcon people can change maps, gamemodes, kick/ban, alter settings-the works).

That is about all I can think of at the moment for preemptive question answering. Ask anything else you may need to.

Ok after much scuffling about in IRC I decided, for the moment. To go with an Escaped Turkey server. The previous server I was using had a better location (NYC) but the cost was substantial.

Escaped Turkey is much less expensive (in fact for the price of the NYC one I could order 4 servers from the turkeys) but it is in Dallas instead of NYC. This is good news for all USA gamers since it is basically a central area. However hardflip tried a server that someone had purchased from them and got around 180 ping sad Location hurts the euros.

However, escaped turkey has a 10 day money back guarantee so I am not exactly worried about the rush. I ordered it so quickly because It takes a day or 2 to set up. If in the 10 days we have the server we find a better deal, we'll go with it.

Most other websites have similiar pricing to the first website we were with. Its a cool $100 to get a 26 player (that is how big the turkeys one is) server for a month. $100 is a lot of money to be spending a month and I feel much more comfortable with $25 from Escaped Turkeys. $25 almost seems too good but I guess we'll find out. Also it means a donation will go a lot further. So instead of worrying about donating once a month (ocelot was trying to stuff money in my pants) you can maybe just donate once every 6 months or so, if you feel so inclined to do so.

The big picture here is that we need a server that can rotate between games (turkeys can, just like the other). BF2 is coming and it seems almost destined to suck a good majority of us in. A 26 player server for BF2 seems pretty awesome and at $25 a month it is rather hard to complain (a 26 player BF1942 server is nearly $130 elsewhere).

Again, we'll see how things turn out grin But the big awesome is that we are doing something rather than just thinking about it.

Once the IP for our new server comes I'll post it and all the details that come with. GG

Oh, also if you want to test your ping out on some of the servers Escaped Turkey offers there is a massive list in this forum thread on their site. The Turkey seems to have quite a good reputation and a rather strong community.

That's ridiculous, Ocelot would never give anyone money.

I have been too busy to game lately but rest assured I will be back soon. Hopefully I will have a job too so I can stuff money and some other things down your pants myself.
