We have just been (very politely) handed our marching orders fron Freenode.

Apparently the 'topic' of the freenode network is open source software, and our clan/forum/whatever we are now channel doesn't really meet that.

We were politely linked to a list of IRC networks by one 'alinderman', freenode staff, after he informed us that we were 'off topic'. So the list that follows is the top ten in that list as of now, for your voting consideration. And also Austnet for anyone that wants to go back there.

My vote goes to QuakeNet. We are essentially a community of gamers and this would fit us best. We don't always discuss games but the point is we can register the channel as a gaming community channel and not be bothered as we still game somewhat regularly and I am sure they won't mind. In the case of freenode we were completely out of place there, as it turns out, so it seems logical that we move.

On the downside Quakenet is very strict and that would defeat the purpose of what Bentest is for. They have strong policies banning racist comments (even in jest) and many of the things we take for granted now.

Edit: MANDOG IT IS THEN

Vote Quakenet:

Reason being, our channel is 'on-topic' and with decent network stability (been on quaknet for the last 6 months, experiencing a netsplit only a few times that i can remember).

I suggest everyone try connecting to quakenet and maintaining a connection so to see for yourself. Also any suggestions for other networks are welcome.

I voted Gamesurge, because the rules state that the owners of the channel are responsible for creating the rules for that channel, whereas a few of the others (quakenet included) seem to be rulewhores.

eg:

"Racism & Nazism

Propagating racism or nazism, or distribution of racist material will result in a network ban."

I'm not saying that theres much of a chance of being found out and kicked off quakenet for NGR AZN HITLER jokes, but...well thats whats happening now.

I have heard that the gamesurge has bad network stability though...

I tried undernet, but the name is limited to 10 characters, which won't fit many of us at all. Which was a pity, because they had fairly lax rules too.

Also, quakenet has no nick registering. This could be a problem.

Frankly, we might have to ignore the poll and take a vote with posts or something, when we find out more about all the networks

I get crappy connects to most anywhere in the world, but Quakenet is decent enough not to throw me out every odd hour.

We're all trying out 4-irc at the moment. Fairly lax rules and fairly good stability so far. We'll see, anyway.

No to QuakeNet - too many users, rules, restrictions.

At the moment I go for GameSurge. I've been connected to their since I was Nookie and it's been fine with me. Netspltis happen about once or twice a week and last for about 4 seconds, so no worries there. They've got a decent bunch of commands and most other ForumPlanet related IRC channels are there.

Okay I asked Chris about a channel on irc.mandog.com and he said it'd probably be fine, he's just going to check with the other team members and get back to me. It's got chanserv and nickserv and of course it's run by shaithis, what more do you need?
