Probably because FP didn't just have weeny little avatars (50x50), but also had some sort of ludicrous file size limitation of (2K or something)

Oh yes, I forgot that particular detail. Mind you, getting VIP at PBnW was an achievement such that I doubt anyone really cared about the limitations on avatars.
These kids nowdays are so spoiled, they can upload full size photos to facebook without having to hang around for two years and get noticed by a moderator or anything!
