So, I imagine everyone here used GameSpy as at least one of their main sources of gaming news and/or reviews at some point in their lives. Back in 2001/2002 I think I mostly used GameSpy Daily for news, and GameSpy and GameSpot for reviews. I used 3DGamers.com for files and downloads back when that sort of thing mattered, as my ISP mirrored their stuff.
GameSpy has obviously changed a lot -they have just 7 staff now. To be honest I don't really use them for anything anymore. I remember when 1up.com launched to much fanfare, but it seems to have been given the usual IGN-buy-to-destroy treatment and looks like a husk of it's former self now as well. 3DGamers also got bought by IGN and no longer exists - which pissed me off at the time, but now seems quite irrelevant with Steam and ISP changes in Oz resulting in decent download limits.
I also used FiringSquad.com for a good many years but it is now pretty much dead - not bought or anything, it just seems to have run out of steam. It did pretty good hardware and game reviews so it was a good single source.
These days I don't use much of anything aside from my
old ISP's gaming website which has been running in some form or another for many years alongside their various game servers, but has only recently become quite professional. I haven't really felt the need for more since I don't game as much as I used to, but also if I do get a game, I tend to get info on it from either
metacritic (for user impressions), or game-specific sites like
CivFanatics.com.
The latest newcomer I have seen appears to be Vox Media's
Polygon. So far I am liking the long-form and I'll probably start using it for reviews. It's
Homefront feature was pretty good. Early days, as it only launched a bit over a week ago. It's forums are that lightweight Web 2.0 format that I hate, so I'll likely just stick to the content.
What have you guys used in the past, and what are you using now?
