I've been approaching this issue from the wrong viewpoint. The first versions of the 360 didn't have native wi-fi. So keeping it always online meant fiddling around with cables and modems in my not so intuitively wired rental house. That's what puts me off. But I'm thinking now that it won't be an issue in the next one.
